Vexillology of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic:
The Teotorosian Collection of Armenian-Language Soviet Banners

The study of the Armenian SSR’s vexillology offers a fascinating window into how an Armenian distinct national identity was synthesized with Soviet internationalism. Between 1920 and 1991, State flags in Caucasian Armenia underwent several transformations, ranging from red banners with Cyrillic writing to Armenian banners depicting Mount Ararat, the Armenian language and a horizontal blue stripe reminiscent of the 1918 Republic.

The changes in how ideology was symbolized through banners reflected broader shifts in Moscow’s policy toward minority national languages such as Armenian and the evolution and standardization of the heraldic standards of the Soviet Union. These flags and their associated state heraldry, reveal a difficult reconciliation between Armenia's ancient cultural heritage and its role as a constituent socialist republic.
