Vexillology of the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic:
A Collection of Armenian-Language Soviet Banners

The study of the Armenian SSR’s vexillology offers a fascinating window into how a distinct national identity was synthesized with Soviet internationalism. Between 1920 and 1991, Armenian flags underwent several transformations, shifting from simple red banners with gold Cyrillic or Armenian lettering to the more iconic 1952 Armenian SSR design featuring the horizontal blue stripe.

These changes were rarely just aesthetic; they reflected broader shifts in Moscow’s policy toward national languages and the evolving heraldic standards of the Soviet Union. By examining these flags and their associated state heraldry, one can trace the visual negotiation between Armenia's ancient cultural heritage and its role as a constituent socialist republic.
