Hunckakians at the border between
the Ottoman Empire and Iran

Hunchakian mobile soldiers in the Persian-Turkish borderland

This Postcard is a rare historical artifact capturing a group of Hunchakian mobile soldiers (Fedayees) stationed along the volatile Persian-Turkish frontier. These fighters were part of the Social Democrat Hunchakian Party’s efforts to defend Armenian civilians and facilitate revolutionary activities against the Ottoman Empire during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Their designation as "mobile" (շրջիկ) highlights their tactical role: they operated as highly flexible guerrilla units, navigating the rugged "borderhead" (Սահմանագլխ) to smuggle armaments, transport volunteers, and provide security in regions where official state protection was non-existent.
Notable Details:
-
The fedayi's diverse clothing, traditional Caucasian papakhi hats, turbans, and European-style coats, reflects the cross-cultural nature of the borderlands between Iran, the Ottoman Empire, and the Russian Empire.
-
By positioning themselves along this specific frontier, these Hunchakian units utilized Persian territory as a safe haven or staging ground to launch operations into Western Armenia (the Ottoman side), effectively using the boundary as a strategic shield.
